KUALA LUMPUR: Multiple SEA Games gold medallist Yeoh Ken Nee dominated the men’s 3m individual springboard competition as expected but it was young Ahmad Amsyar who stole the show in the diving competition of the Mini Olympic Games at the National Aquatic Centre in Bukit Jalil yesterday.
The 17-year-old managed to get the better of fellow national team-mate Mohd Fakhrul Afandi, who had just returned from the World Championships in Rome, for the silver.
Ken Nee led from start to finish in the eight-diver field of the final, amassing a total of 450.50 points.
Ahmad was in front of Fakhrul after the second dive and held on to secure silver with 376.95 points. Fakhrul settled for the bronze on 370.05.
And with a place in the national squad for the Laos SEA Games at stake, Ahmad certainly turned out a winning performance in his own right. Ahmad had also qualified for the final ahead of Fakhrul in the morning.
“I’m happy to secure the silver ahead of Fakhrul. He had a higher difficulty level than mine but I was able to do more consistent dives and I think that was why I won the silver. As for the gold, Ken Nee is the most experienced diver and the gap is still big.
“I hope to make it to the SEA Games squad as it has not been decided who will be the second diver beside Ken Nee for the individual 3m springboard,” said Ahmad, who is the first Perlis diver to make the national elite squad.
Ahmad, who has been diving for the past five years, is not just looking at making the SEA Games but has also set his sights on competing in the Commonwealth and Asian Games next year.
Leong Mun Yee won the women’s 3m springboard title with a tally of 307.20 points to pick up her third gold of the Games. Pandelela Rinong, who took silver in 286.80 points, will have her chance to pick up her third gold in the 10m platform discipline on the final day of competition today.
