The 17-year-old got his first-ever victory in an individual event at the Malaysia Games when he won the men's 3m springboard at the Wisma Belia Aquatic centre in Kuantan yesterday.

The Klang-born Yiwei came up with a total score of 386.40 to take gold while second-placed Ahmad Amsyar Azman of Perlis managed 376.05. Sarawak's Carlysle Chan (323.85) won bronze.

Yiwei said he was delighted to win his second gold medal in his third appearance in the Games.

Mun Yee Brings Her Hobby Along To Kill Time

PALEMBANG: Diver Leong Mun Yee is so engrossed in cross stitching that she has even brought her hobby here.

But rest assured, diving is still very much in her blood and she has no plans to stop competing in the SEA Games.

Mun Yee has never missed the Games since competing in Chiangmai in 1995 and this will be a record eighth straight campaign for her.

That makes her the first Malaysian female athlete with the most number of Games appearances.

But just don’t ask her how many gold medals she has won.

“I’ve lost count ... but I am sure I’ve never failed to win at least one since the Kuala Lumpur Games in 2001,” said the Perak-born diver, who turns 27 next month.

“I will still dive as long as I am in the national team.

“If I stay free of injuries and remain competitive, I want to go for the next Games as well.”

And it could be double joy for Mun Yee in her eighth outing.

She will only compete in the synchronised disciplines, partnering Wendy Ng Yan Yee in the 3m springboard and Kam Ling Kar in the 10m platform.

“I am just focusing on the synchro as there are other younger divers capable of challenging me in the individual events,” said Mun Yee.

“We are the strongest, on paper, for the 3m springboard but nothing is certain as one poor dive can change the outcome.

“For the platform synchro, I have a new partner and we have not competed together before this, so we have to see how things go in training.”

Mun Yee said cross stitching was her way of spending whatever little spare time she has.

“Free time is a luxury for us and it is mostly over the weekends,” said Mun Yee, a silver medallist at the Guangzhou Asian Games last year.

The diving competition begins tomorrow and the Malaysians could bag the lion’s share of the eight gold medals at stake.

Aquatics: Divers Bag Six Gold In Wellington

Ooi Tze Liang won two gold and one silver at the Asia Pacific Rim Junior Invitational Championships in New Zealand last week.
Ooi Tze Liang won two gold and one silver at the Asia Pacific Rim Junior Invitational Championships in New Zealand last week.
THE national back-up diving team turned in a commendable performance at last weekend's Asia Pacific Rim Junior Invitational Championships by bagging six gold, five silver and six bronze medals in Wellington, New Zealand.
The gold medals came courtesy of Ooi Tze Liang, Jasmine Lai and Loh Zhaiyi in the championships which attracted 60 divers from China, Australia, Malaysia, Hong Kong, India and Croatia.

Tze Liang, who competed at the recent World Championships in Shanghai, claimed the boys' Group A (16-18 years) 1m springboard event with a 537.15 total ahead of China's Zhi Dongwei. Compatriot Chew Yi Wei was fourth with 448.90 points.

The Penang-born diver earned his second title when he teamed up with Yi Wei to win the boys' Open 3m springboard synchro discipline with 323.49 points.
Tze Liang, however, had to settle for silver in the 10m platform with a 426.60 series behind Dongwei (505.95). Pui Yee stamped her mark when she upset the form book in the girls' Group A (16-18) 10m platform competition.

She garnered 404.05 points to take gold ahead of compatriot Kam Ling Kar (385.95) while Traisy Vivien only managed fifth place (351.50). Pui Yee then partnered Ling Kar to win gold in the 3m springboard synchro with 274.68 points.

Loh Zhaiyi also created an upset by bagging the girls' Group B (14-15) 10m platform and 3m springboard titles.

She, however, failed in her bid to make it to the podium in the 1m springboard when she finished fourth.

The eight-member team's strong showing in New Zealand will surely boost their confidence ahead of next month's Asian Age-group diving championships in Palembang, Indonesia.

National diving coach Yang Zhuliang was delighted with the performance of his young divers.

"They are on the right track for next year's World Junior Championships in Adelaide. I am now looking at naming a few of them for the Indonesia Sea Games (Nov 11-22)," said Zhuliang.

The Malaysian medallists:

Gold -- Boy's Group A 1m springboard: Ooi Tze Liang; 3m springboard synchro: Chew Yi Wei-Ooi Tze Liang.

Youngsters Bag Six Golds In The Asia Pacific Rim Junior Invitational

PETALING JAYA: It was not just the senior divers who flew the flag high for Malaysia at the World University Games in Shenzhen but the juniors were also making their presence felt on the other side of the globe.
Malaysian back-up divers did well to bag six golds, five silvers and six bronze medals in their first participation in the Asia Pacific Rim Junior Invitational Championships held in Wellington over the weekend.
Back-up diver Jasmine Lai Pui Yee underlined her talent with an upset performance in the girls’ Group A (16-18) platform competition.
A winner: Ooi Tze Liang won the Group A 1m springboard competition in Wellington over the weekend.
Jasmine finished with 404.05 points to take the gold ahead of fellow team-mate Kam Ling Kar (385.95 points) while Traisy Vivien, who took part in the World Championships in Shanghai last month, only managed fifth place (351.50 points).
Jasmine also partnered Ling Kar to take gold for Malaysia in the girls Open 3m springboard synchro with 274.68 points.
Ooi Tze Liang, who also competed at the world meet in Shanghai, won the boy’s Group A 1m springboard competition with 537.15 points ahead of Zhi Dongwei of Shandong province.
Another Malaysian Chew Yi Wei was fourth with 448.90 points.
Tze Liang failed in his bid to complete a sweep of the platform titles in Group A when he settled for silver with 426.60 points behind Dongwei (505.95 points).
The Penang-born diver was not to be denied his second gold medal as he teamed up with Yi Wei to win the boy’s Open 3m springboard competition with 323.49 points.
Loh Zhaiyi came out tops for Malaysia in the girls’ Group B (14-15) platform and 3m springboard competitions.
Zhaiyi failed in her bid to make it to the podium in the 1m springboard where she finished fourth.
The biggest New Zealand diving event of the year brought together 60 junior elite springboard and platform divers with competitors from China, Australia, Malaysia, Hong Kong, India and Croatia.
Malaysia sent four boys and four girls for the meet accompanied by coaches Yao Fu Ling and
Huang Qiang.
The strong showing certainly bodes well for the youngsters ahead of the Asian age-group diving
championships in Palembang at the end of next month.
Diving head coach Yang Zhuliang was happy with the performance of the second echelon divers in
their first major competition outside the country this year.
“With the exception of Tze Liang and Traisy, the others still have a long way to go to catch up with the seniors but they are on the right track.
“Their goal is to be ready for the World Junior Championships in Adelaide next year.
“Some of the back-up divers performed well and they might be going for the SEA Games in
Indonesia but it will be decided later,” he said.
