Aquatics: Pui Yee Makes Clean Sweep

JASMINE Lai Pui Yee capped a perfect outing at the Asian Age-Group Aquatics Championships by winning the girls' 3-metre springboard Group A (16-18) event in Jakarta on Sunday to complete a sweep of all four Olympic events.

Pui Yee earned 416.50 points to win gold followed by compatriot Kam Ling Kar (415.50) and Japan's Yuka Kobayashi (397.80).

The 16-year-old had also won the 10m platform individual discipline and partnered Ling Kar for gold in the platform and springboard synchro events.

The Ipoh-born, together with Ling Kar, will return to Indonesia for next month's Sea Games, where diving will be held in Palembang and their performance in the Asian Age-Group will give them a boost in their first ever senior assignment.
Malaysia's second title of the day was through Chew Yiwei in the boys' springboard Group A final.

Yiwei, returning to the pool after being rested for two days for a back strain, posted a 490.45 total ahead of Kuwait's silver medallist Alharbi Rashid (467.80) and Indonesia's bronze winner Andriyan Andre (449.80)

It was the second gold medal for the back-up diver who had won the 1m springboard event.

Amateur Swimming Union of Malaysia secretary Edwin Chong was delighted with the performance of the back-up divers.

"We managed a haul of seven gold, nine silver and one bronze with a team of eight divers made up mostly of our back-up divers. All of them performed to expectations here," said Edwin in Jakarta on Sunday.

Divers Yiwei And Jasmine End Malaysia’s Campaign On A Golden Note

PETALING JAYA: Back-up divers Chew Yiwei and Jasmine Lai capped a perfect end to Malaysia’s campaign with a sweep of the individual 3m springboard titles in Group A (16-18) at the Asian Age-Group Aquatics Championships in Jakarta.
Yiwei, who had been rested for two days after straining his back muscles in training, returned to action to win the boy’s 3m springboard gold medal with 490.45 points.
He finished ahead of Kuwait’s Rashid Alharbi, who managed 467.80 points with the bronze going to Indonesia’s Andre Andriyan with 449.80 points.
It was the second gold medal for the Bukit Jalil Sports School student who had won the 1m springboard event last weekend.
Jasmine brought her campaign to a memorable close by winning the girls’ 3m springboard final with 416.50 points to complete a golden sweep of all four Olympic titles.
Malaysian team-mate Kam Ling Kar took the silver with 415.4 points ahead of Japan’s Yuka Kobayashi, who managed 397.8 points.
Jasmine had also won the platform individual event and partnered Ling Kar to come out tops in the synchro disciplines for springboard and platform.
The duo will return to Indonesia next month to compete in their first SEA Games in Palembang and their performances in the Asian age-group meet will put them in good stead as they face their first assignment at the senior level.
Amateur Swimming Union of Malaysia secretary Edwin Chong is happy the back-up divers made their presence felt in the absence of the Chinese divers, who did not compete because they had commitments in their own National Inter-city Championships.
”We only took part in two events on the last day of competition and we managed to win both to end with a total of seven gold medals.
”In fact, we only sent a small team of eight divers made up mostly of second stringers.
”We are happy they performed to the best of their abilities,” he said.
Altogether, Malaysia finished with a total medals haul of 7-9-1 in diving.
Malaysia are only represented by the divers in the Asian age-group meet, which is held every two years.
The event was supposed to be held in Palembang to test out the SEA Games venue for aquatics but was brought to Jakarta at the last moment as the original venue was not ready.

Diving: Pui Yee On Fire For Malaysia

JASMINE Lai Pui Yee (back) and Kam Ling Kar clinched the gold in the 10-metre platform synchro Open discipline in Jakarta yesterday.
JASMINE Lai Pui Yee (back) and Kam Ling Kar clinched the gold in the 10-metre platform synchro Open discipline in Jakarta yesterday.
JASMINE Lai Pui Yee is destined for glory at next month's Indonesia Sea Games after another splashing display at the Asian Age-Group Aquatics Championships in Jakarta yesterday.
Pui Yee was again in near-perfect form as the 16-year-old won the women's 10-metre platform synchro Open with Kam Ling Kar ahead of Macau's I Teng-Cheong Pui Man and a Thai pair. The Ipoh-born Pui Yee went on to grab a second gold medal in the girls' 10m platform individual Group A (16-18) final ahead of Ling Kar.

Jasmine amassed 369.10 points, followed by Ling Kar (339.20) and Japan's Yuka Kobayashi (320.15) for her first individual title in the championships.

She and Lin Kar won the women's 3m springboard synchro open final on Friday and the clean sweep in the synchro events should boost their confidence and give them the edge over their rivals at the Sea Games.
A confident Pui Yee said she wants to continue her winning ways at the Sea Games after two successful international outings.

"I want to make it a memorable affair in my first Sea Games. As for the events, our coach has not decided yet as he wants to gauge our performance in training and competition before deciding," said Pui Yee when contacted in Jakarta yesterday.

"However, Ling Kar and I will be ready as we trained for both disciplines (platform and springboard). The platform individual title is my second after my victory at the recent Asia Pacific Rim Junior Invitational meet in Wellington."

Pui Yee and Ling Kar also made their presence felt at last month's Diving Asia Cup, where they won silver behind China in the platform synchro discipline.

Malaysia picked up three more silver medals through Loh Jiayi (girls 10m platform Group B -- 14-15), Muhd Nazreen (boys' 10m platform Group C -- 12-13) and Adrian Chan (boys' 10m platform Group A -- 16-17).

The national team, comprising eight divers (five elite and three back-up), have won five gold, eight silver and one bronze with one day of competition left.
