Ili can be a future star in the pool
ILI Gan Abdul Rahman is the answer to her mother’s prayers.
More than two decades ago, her mother, Marina Ng, was posted to Pulau Ketam as a teacher while expecting her first child.
Having to endure the trip aboard the ferry travelling to the island, she decided all her children needed to learn to swim.
Ili is the youngest of four siblings — brother Isa, 22, sisters Diana, 21 and Farah, 20 — all of whom have represented Negri Sembilan in age-group competitions.
Ili grabbed a silver in the Girls’ 15-17 age-group in the 100m breaststroke in 1:21.18s behind national senior swimmer Leung Chii Lin of Sabah (1:16.23s).
She beat another Sabahan Lai Wei Li (1:21.74s) in the national age-group championships at Darul Ehsan Aquatics Centre (PADE) in Shah Alam on April 17-19.
She has maintained her form as last year she won a silver in the 100m breaststroke and bronze in 50m breaststroke.
In 2007, she competed in the SportExcel-Milo-Core Sports- NSC junior circuit’s 2nd Leg on Aug 4-5 in Paroi where she performed commendably by winning a gold in the 50m breaststroke (1:23.38) and silver in the 100m breaststroke (37.92).
Ili is Negri’s second best female swimmer behind double Olympian Siow Yi Ting since the retirement of Chai Sook Fun and the temporary break taken by Sukma XII star swimmer Lew Yih Wei. Ili has shone at the MSSNS meets where she won the best swimmer titles in 2005, 2007 and 2008.
The girl trains with the national back-up team at the national aquatics centre in Bukit Jalil under coach Hii Heng Cheong twice a day for almost four hours.
The polite Ili, whose favourite event is the 50m breaststroke, said: “I love swimming because it is the best exercise and I like being popular in school. “When I grow up I want to become a coach like my brother Isa who is now a part-time coach.
“My mother, a judge in swimming competitions, and my family provide me with lots of encouragement and moral support to excel.
” Her mother said: “Instead of just sitting at home watching TV, my children acquired useful skills.
“Ili has the talent and as long as she can balance her studies with sports, I want her to continue swimming at the highest level.”
