Golden Dive For Rashid And Pardika

ABDUL Rashid and Pardika Indoma were the first divers to step out on the makeshift extension to the diving platform at Wisma Belia Swimming Complex in Bandar Indera Mahkota yesterday – and they promptly bagged the gold medal for Sarawak.

Rashid and Pardika jumped from the 10m height en route to winning the men’s platform synchro event on the second day of aquatic action.

The platform events could only be held after the steel plate extension was added to accommodate the requirements for the diving competitions.

The higher platform must extend an extra metre out compared to the lower platform but that wasn’t the case with the newly built facilities at the Sukma venue.

Rashid said he was uncomfortable using the extension at first but added that “it was better than nothing”.

“We could have come into contact with the 5m platform if we had jumped from the 10m height without the extension,” he said.

“The higher platform was supposed to extend further out to give us clearance to execute our routines. The extension was wobbly when we stood at the edge but it was also due to our weight.”

Pardika, the elder brother of national diver Pandelela Rinong, said it was just a matter of getting used to it.

“The first dive is usually difficult because of nervousness but you get used to it quickly. I’m happy we did our part to deliver for Sarawak,” said Pardika, who is hoping to make the squad for the Myanmar SEA Games next year.

Meanwhile, Jasmine Lai Pui Yee partnered Kam Ling Kar to the women’s platform synchro gold medal for Perak.

It was her second gold medal in as many days, having won the 1m springboard competition on Sunday.
