The Klang-born Yiwei came up with a total score of 386.40 to take gold while second-placed Ahmad Amsyar Azman of Perlis managed 376.05. Sarawak's Carlysle Chan (323.85) won bronze.
Yiwei said he was delighted to win his second gold medal in his third appearance in the Games.
Partnering Ahmad Fakhri Khairuddin, he won the 3m springboard synchronised gold at the 2010 Malacca Games.
"This is a surprise for me as I had targeted only a medal, but not gold in this event today (yesterday)," said the Bukit Jalil Sports School student.
"I am really satisfied with my dives especially my last attempt. Despite my launch being rather poor, I managed to salvage the situation for a decent finish, which was only possible after all the hard work I had put into training.
"I still have another two events here and will try my best to win more medals though I am aware the competition will be tougher from here onwards."
Yiwei will next compete in the men's 1m springboard individual event, which is expected to be dominated by national diver Ooi Tze Liang, and in the men's 3m springboard synchronised event.
The women's 1m springboard individual event yesterday saw Perak's Jasmine Lai take the gold with a 228.20 total score while Loh Zhiayi of the Federal Territories was second on 215.40.
In third spot was Selangor's Adeline Chin who managed an overall score of 196.65.
