Pandelela Hopes To Recover Before AUG Next Month

KUALA LUMPUR: Diver Pandelela Rinong hopes her left ankle injury will heal in time for next month’s Asean University Games (AUG).

The 19-year-old Pandelela, who is undergoing light training in preparation for the AUG in Laos, was left out of the Asian Championships in Dubai from Nov 22-25 because of the injury.

“I can only do light training so as not to aggravate the injury which is taking a long time to heal. I also have very little time to rest now that I’m both a student and athlete,” Pandelela said at the National Aquatic Centre in Bukit Jalil yesterday. Diving head coach Yang Zhuliang said the Olympic bronze medallist sustained the injury in training and it has prevented her from executing the full somersault routines.

Pandelela became the first Malaysian diver to win an Olympic medal when she clinched the bronze in the women’s 10m platform at the London Games in August. — Bernama
