Quiet Night As Swimmers Fail To Get On Podium

PALEMBANG: It was a quiet night for Malaysia at the swimming pool as none of those in action made it to the podium at the Jakabaring Aquatic Centre yesterday.

The women’s 4x200m freestyle was the best hope for a medal but the Malaysian quartet pulled out after swimmer Hii Siew Siew’s ankle injury flared up.

Team manager May Tan said Siew Siew was one of the four swimmers entered for the relay alongside Khoo Cai Lin, Chan Kah Yan and Erika Kong.

“She twisted her ankle two weeks ago and it flared up here due to the uneven walkway around Jakabaring,” said May.

“We withdrew the relay team although there was a chance for a medal as Siew Siew is down to swim in her main event (the 200m butterfly) tomorrow.”

The gold medal drought may come to an end when Foo Jian Beng takes to the pool for the men’s 100m freestyle.
