PALEMBANG: Divers Leong Mun Yee and Wendy Ng Yan Yee retained their women’s 3m springboard synchronised title to hand Malaysia their first gold medal in aquatics at the Jakabaring Aquatic Centre yesterday.
The perfect start has boosted Wendy’s hopes of making a breakthrough in the individual 3m springboard event tomorrow.
Mun Yee-Wendy led from start to finish to claim gold with 296.10 points, ahead of Indonesia’s Natalie Dinda-Dewi Setyaningsih (250.20pts) and the Philippines’ Sheila Mae Perez-Ceseil Domenios (243.12).
Wendy, a rhythmic gymnast before making the switch to diving, was happy to have done her part in helping to keep the women’s springboard synchronised title with Malaysia.

In sync: Malaysia’s Leong Mun Yee and Ng Yan Yee performing their gold-medal winning routine in the women’s 3m springboard event Sunday. |
“We did better than the scores we managed at the Guangzhou Asian Games last year,” said 18-year-old Wendy, who made her SEA Games debut in Laos two years ago.
“It has given me more confidence.
“I will try to fight for my first individual title in the 3m springboard on Tuesday.
“Besides my team-mate Cheong Jun Hoong, I’m expecting stiff competition from the Vietnamese and Indonesian divers and also the Filipino girl Sheila Mae.”
Malaysia have not won the individual 3m springboard title in the last three SEA Games and Mun Yee was the last winner in Hanoi 2003.
Coach Yang Zhuliang said they would have to win the event to meet the six-gold target in diving.
“The women’s individual springboard will be the toughest,” he said.
Malaysia did not take part in the men’s 10m platform synchronised event yesterday.
But a double sweep can be expected when Yeoh Ken Nee-Bryan Nickson take the plunge in the men’s 3m springboard synchronised while Mun Yee and youngster Trasie Vivien combine in the women’s 10m platform synchronised.
