Malaysia Dominate AUG Diving
VIENTIANE: Malaysia almost made a clean sweep of diving gold medals when they won four golds and two silvers at the Asean University Games (AUG) 2012 at the Aquatic Centre of the National Sports Complex here yesterday.
Cheong Jun Hoong won the gold in women’s 3m springboard diving while her teammate, Ng Yan Yee took the silver.
Indonesia’s Sari Ambarwati Suprihatin had to content with the bronze.
Earlier, national Olympic divers, Leong Mun Yee and Bryan Nickson Lomas contributed three golds.
Mun Yee bagged the gold in women’s 1m springboard diving and 10m platform diving while Bryan in men’s 1m springboard diving.
Another silver was contributed by Jun Hoong in women’s 1m springboard diving.
Team manager Ariffin Mohamed Yusof said he was pleased with the commitment shown by the divers who attained the target of getting four golds in the three-day diving competition.
“We must now get ready for the World University Games next year. Mun Yee is no longer be qualified to join the squad, but we still have Pandelela Rinong, Jun Hoong and Yan Yee.
“However, we are facing a dearth of male divers. For now, we can only rely on Bryan for most of the divers are still in schools,” he said told reporters here.
In tennis, Malaysia had to settle for the silver in the women’s team event when Jawariah Nordin and Shirley Ling Shio Ling lost 0-2 to Thailand in the final.
Meanwhile, Sarawak’s Jackie Wong contributed a gold medal to the national contingent after winning the men’s hammer throw, recording a winning throw of 52.84m. — Bernama
