Bryan, Jun Hoong book diving final spots in Montreal

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s diving squad opened their campaign in the Canadian Open on a positive note with Bryan Nickson Lomas and Cheong Jun Hoong advancing to their respective finals in Montreal.

Bryan was impressive in winning his semi-final grouping of the men’s 10m platform while Jun Hoong booked her spot after finishing third in her semi-final grouping in the women’s 3m springboard.

The final of each individual discipline is made up of the three best divers from the two semi-finals in the Canadian Open, which is part of the World Grand Prix circuit.

Bryan reached the semi-finals with the third highest total of 448.45 out of 21 divers competing in the preliminaries.

The Sarawak-born Bryan, who has high hopes of earning a breakthrough in his third Olympic appearance in London, stepped up in the semi-finals with 483.75 points.

Bryan could have broken the 500 points barrier if not for an awry fourth dive, which only earned him 39.60 points.

Jun Hoong will find it harder to fight for a medal unless she improves on her consistency.

The 22-year-old, who is bound for the London Olympics as well, posted 299.55 points in her semi-final grouping behind Canadian Pamela Ware (327.75) dan Australia’s two-time Commonwealth Games gold medallist Sharleen Stratton (308.15).

Another Malaysian diver Wendy Ng Yan Yee failed to reach the semi-finals after placing 17th out of 27 participants in the women’s 3m springboard.
