Tze Liang Fails To Make The Cut For The Olympics

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s hopes of having full representation in the individual disciplines for diving at the London Olympics were dashed when platform diver Ooi Tze Liang failed to make the cut.

Amateur Swimming Union Malaysia secretary Edwin Chong said only Wendy Ng Yan Yee’s name was on the provisional list of divers who have been offered additional slots through the dive-offs at the Diving World Cup in London last month.

“Tze Liang’s name was not on the list for the men’s 10m platform after the dive-off but Wendy’s name is there for the women’s 3m springboard.

“Wendy finished fourth in the women’s 3m springboard dive-off. She has to wait until June for the confirmation when every country that got the quota slots submit their entries.

“But I don’t foresee any problem for Wendy. Altogether, we got seven individual quotas and three for the synchro disciplines,” said Edwin.

Despite Tze Liang failing to join Bryan Nickson Lomas for the men’s 10m platform, Malaysia will still boast of having their biggest diving squad for the Olympics.

The individual events, where Malaysia will field the maximum of two divers, are the men’s 3m springboard (Bryan and Yeoh Ken Nee), women’s 10m platform (Pandelela Rinong and Traisy Vivien Tukiet) and women’s 3m springboard (Cheong Jun Hoong and Wendy).

Bryan has also qualified for the 3m springboard synchro with naturalised Malaysian Huang Qiang after the duo got it right in their first ever partnership to bag a historic bronze medal at the World Cup meet in London.

Pandelela earned two additional spots in the synchro events, with Leong Mun Yee in the women’s 10m platform and Jun Hoong in the women’s 3m springboard.

The divers will train in China for six weeks before going to London for the Olympics.
