One Bad Dive Foils Malaysians’ Medal Bid

PETALING JAYA: One less-than-perfect dive was all it took to spoil Pandelela Rinong-Leong Mun Yee’s chances of mounting the podium for the second straight week in the women’s 10m platform synchro final at the FINA Diving World Series in Beijing.

Pandelela-Mun Yee (322.14 points) missed out on the bronze medal by a mere 4.26 points as Canadians Roseline Filion-Meaghan Benfeito finished with 326.40 points to take the third spot after the fifth and final dive.

Mun Yee ended with a bigger splash on her entry with Pandelela in the fourth dive and it saw them slipping to fifth after earning only 68.16 points.

The Malaysian pair did better on the fifth attempt, scoring 74.88 but it was too little too late as the Canadians hit form when it mattered most to secure the last spot on the podium.

Mexicans Paola Espinosa-Alejandra Orozco took silver this time with 327.48 points while China’s reigning world champions Chen Ruolin-Wang Hao emerged victorious for the second week in a row on 360.66 points.

Pandelela-Mun Yee had taken silver behind the Chinese pair in the opening leg of the prestigious series in Dubai last week.

They were also the silver medallists in their maiden participation when Beijing hosted a leg of the series last year.

Pandelela had taken bronze in the 10m platform individual the previous day.

Despite missing out on a second medal for the country, the Malaysian pairing can take heart that their performance wasn’t too bad after all.

In fact, the efforts of the London Olympic-bound pairing were better than what they managed in Dubai when they took silver with 316.38 points.

Amateur Swimming Union of Malaysia secretary Edwin Chong said the Malaysian pair are of the same standard with the others, except for China, at the moment.

“Whoever makes the least mistakes in the optional dives will end up getting the medals. It’s okay if we don’t win a medal as it is important for them to get recognised by the judges and improve on their consistencies before the Olympics,” he said.

Pandelela-Mun Yee will take a two-week break before the series resumes with the third leg in Moscow from April 13-14, followed by the finale in Tijuana, Mexico, from April 20-21.
