AQUATICS: Requests To Be Granted

No compromise in Olympic bid

NATIONAL diving coach Yang Zhuliang can rest assured that his concern over poor facilities at the National Aquatic Centre and his request for a longer training stint in China will be looked into.

Sports Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek said no expense will be spared in ensuring the national divers receive optimum preparation in the run-up to the London Olympics in July and August.

Zhuliang had earlier said the 10m platform does not conform to international standards and that six torn trampolines in the dry gym next to the centre pose a health hazard and also requested for an extended training programme in China.

"We will look into the matter and in order to ensure success, we will fix it (the facilities). All we require is an official request from the association (Amateur Swimming Union of Malaysia) and we will repair it so that it will not be used as an excuse later.

"As for the training stint, it is not a problem. We are determined to provide the best for the divers whether they are training at home or abroad. We will consider all their requirements in detail," said Ahmad Shabery at his office in Putrajaya yesterday.

National Sports Council director-general Datuk Zolkples Embong said the matter will be discussed in a joint-committee meeting next week.

"There is still a possibility of having more divers qualifying for the Olympics and we have always given them good exposure and training. We have told them to come up with a plan for this year and it will be discussed at our joint meeting sometime next week," said Zolkples.

To date, Bryan Nickson Lomas, Yeoh Keen Nee and Pandelela Rinong have earned Malaysia four quota spots for the Olympics with additional spots up for grabs at the World Cup meet in London on Feb 20-26.
