SEA GAMES: Mun Yee In Fear Of History

Biased judging in the Sea Games had denied Leong Mun Yee titles in the past and the 27-year-old is hoping the current edition would be free from similar controversies.

"Unfair judging robbed me of gold medals at the 2003 (Hanoi), 2005 (Manila) and 2007 (Korat) editions. It was fine in Laos, two years ago and I hope for the same here," said Mun Yee at the Jakabaring Aquatic Centre yesterday.

Mun Yee, whose best ever Sea Games haul was four gold medals at the 2001 Kuala Lumpur edition, was a hot favourite in the 10m platform synchro along with Cheong Jun Hoong in Hanoi but finished second behind Indonesia's Shenny Ratna Amelia-Herliani Dias Sukhamati.

She was also robbed of the 3m springboard titles in the 2005 and 2007 editions, losing to Sheila Mae Perez of the Philippines on both occasions.

"I like the venue and want to do well here. But diving is a subjective sport and anything can happen if the judging is unfair. However, judges cannot deny you points if you dive well. I hope to be in perfect form here," said Mun Yee, who won the 3m springboard and 10m platform synchro disciplines at the 2009   edition.

Mun Yee said she was confident of regaining both synchro titles in Palembang.

"Wendy (Ng Yan Yee) and I are in good form and our goal is to win our third successive 3m springboard synchro title. I was supposed to compete in only one event but my coach (Yang Zhuliang) has chosen me ahead of Jasmine Lai to partner Kam Ling Kar in the 10m platform synchro," she added.

"I want to compete in my fourth straight Olympics but I've not done it yet after missing the cut at the World Championships and Asian Cup. A good performance here will help me gain confidence before next year's World Cup in London, where I hope to clinch a spot along with Pandelela (Rinong) in the 10m platform synchro," she added.

Malaysian divers are expected to win six or seven titles out of the eight events in  diving, which starts tomorrow.
