Yesterday, Suzanna made a successful return to competition, bagging the gold for Malaysia in the technical solo routine of the Malaysian Open and age-group synchronised swimming championships at the National Aquatic Centre in Bukit Jalil yesterday.
Suzanna returned from a seven-month break to win the competition, finishing her six compulsory rotations with a total of 74.667 points.
The 21-year-old staved off a strong challenge from fellow Gemilang 2006 programme trainee Shareen Png Hui Chen, who took silver with 72.667. Uzbekistan's Darya Mojaeva took bronze with 72.667 points.

BACK TO FORM: Suzanna Ghazali Bujang (standing) saw off the challenge of Shareen Png Hui Chen to win the solo title in the national synchronised swimming meet Saturday. |
Suzanna, who competed in Sukma (Malaysia Games) in May before returning to Vancouver to resume her studies, was satisfied with her comeback performance.
“I had not taken part in an international competition for sometime because of my studies. In fact, this was my first international solo competition in two years. But I still trained regularly because I wanted to do well in this Malaysian Open,” said the second year psychology student of Douglas College in Vancouver.
Her last international competition in the solo event was the Manchester Commonwealth Games in 2002, when she finished fifth.
Now on a semester break, Suzanna will be competing in the free solo routine today.
“I will be out to win my second gold today,” she announced.
Suzanna, a double gold medallist at the Kuala Lumpur SEA Games in 2001, is currently without a partner after Sara retired after Sukma. The duo had been representing Malaysia since 1999 and they won the duet event in the 2001 SEA Games.
Suzanna will likely be partnered with Shareen, who is based in Bukit Jalil, for the Commonwealth and Asian Games in 2006.
“I may return here two or three months earlier before any major tournament and then train with my partner.”
Suzanna's major goal next year is the World Championships in Montreal in July next year. “I am looking to finish in the top 25 in the individual event,” she said.
